Did The Devil Make Me Do It?

I once had a horrifying dream about a lion prowling around my neighborhood, crashing through people’s doors and dragging them out into the street.  Fun times! Needless to say, I didn’t sleep anymore that night. But it reminded me all too vividly of a verse in the Bible:

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8

Now we’re going to talk about a topic no one likes. Sin. Because Satan doesn’t have the power to devour us unless we let him. And the way we let him is by giving into temptation and allowing sin to ruin us. So is it right to say ‘The Devil made me do it?’

Why I’m Resolving NOT to do a Bible Reading Plan

Oh, the New Year. The annual clean slate.  The time when people jumpstart resolutions and gym memberships are half price. There is renewed hope…

I have tried reading plans several times over the years. I have signed up for daily emails, registered for phone apps, downloaded check-off sheets - and yet, I never seem to make it to the end.  So this year, I’m going to try to do something different.

I resolve to NOT do a Bible reading plan.

Who's That Guy?

Have you ever heard of Melchizedek?  Melchize-who, you ask? And more importantly, why does he matter?

In Genesis 14, after Abraham (at the time called Abram) wins an important battle, he has a brief interaction with a king and priest named Melchizedek.  Reading about this interaction in Genesis only, it is easy to gloss over the passage with an attitude like this: 

“…There is this king, who is also a high priest.  His name is Melchize-something.  Abram gives him a tenth of the spoils from his victory… cool, I guess?  Whatever, moving on…”
