Security in Christ


People, all people, long for security. Vicissitudes come in all variety of shapes and sizes, throwing all variety of people to their knees.  With things around us constantly moving and changing, and not always in a pleasant or expected direction, we need something to hold onto. It is a real, legitimate need that we have. 

Security gives us hope, gives us something we trust. It must come from something that is unmoving, unchanging; otherwise, it is not really secure, right?

Jesus Is The Light of the World

John 1:4-5
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

I recall seeing an illustration once about light that changed the way that I understood Jesus. I will warn you that it was incredibly simple; obvious, even. But the realization that followed for me was profound. 

In dark room you simply flick on a lamp, and light fills the space. It fills the space imperfectly, yes; but it fills the space nonetheless. The darkness does not overcome the light, but the light shines through the darkness. We see shadows according to the light source’s location; and it is brighter right next to the source than it is several feet away. Yet still, light challenges and overcomes the darkness. How Did We Get Here?

Look with me, if you would, to the life of Abram (not yet Abraham) Genesis 12 and 13. At this point, he is responding to God’s call to leave his country and follow Him. Abram has yet to become a father. His nephew, Lot, goes with him on this strange and special journey; and we can imagine that the bond they have formed is a close one. And then, in Genesis 13, conflict strikes and the pair separates.  

Abraham is probably wondering, “How did we get here?”
