I Am Small

Psalm 8:1
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

For one semester during my junior year in college, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Lithuania.  God used these few months to teach me so many things about His character and who I am in Christ.

It took less than two weeks for the jolt of living abroad to set in.  I had all the symptoms of culture shock, and I felt homesick and anxious.  Thankfully, I was surrounded by a group of believers to remind me of God’s goodness.

On a night when I felt especially low, there was a praise and worship time in my student dorm.  Although I wasn’t totally in the mood, I decided to attend. After worship time, we broke into smaller groups to share prayer concerns and pray for one another.

God will take us where we didn’t plan to go in order to produce in us what we couldn’t achieve on our own.
— Paul Tripp

When it was my turn to share prayer requests, I confessed I felt so small and far away from God that night.

Instead of judging me for struggling, the group prayed for me and some even confessed that they felt the same way that I did!  With those confessions, God honored our prayer time. We felt encouraged and knew that God heard our prayers.

That night, we ended our time together by singing “All in All,” an older praise song that reminds us of God’s character. Just being in each other’s’ company in God’s presence, worshiping together filled my spirit.

Leaving there that night, I felt small compared to God’s greatness.  He put me in a place so far out of my comfort zone that I couldn’t help but rely on Him.
