I quit watching the news a long time ago. Hopelessness, pain, tragedy. It can numb your heart, or else send you to the pits of despair over the state our world is in. It was too much for me. “Surely God doesn’t want me to feel bad, so why succumb myself to the onslaught of suckiness that is the news. It’s not like I can do much about it anyhow.”
Then one day as I was driving home from dropping kids off at school (when I do my best thinking), David Crowder told me I was wrong. Well, maybe God told me, through one of his songs.
Come out of sadness from wherever you’ve been
Come broken hearted, let rescue begin
Come find your mercy, oh sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal.
-Come As You Are
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal. Hmm. Insert aha moment. I can watch the news, engage the ugliness of this world, and not be driven to despair. Instead of turning away from the sadness, I can pray. I can shine a ray of hope to a broken, dying world.
Why? Heaven is coming!
Romans 8 : 18
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Friends, we have THE HOPE OF THE WORLD. Nothing on this earth gives us lasting hope. It is all fleeting. But the surety of heaven where we can fully know and be known by God is hope we can cling to.
So here is a little picture to set your mind on when the suffering surrounding you clouds your view of the only HOPE this world (and you) have, Jesus.
