Our Deepest Need at Christmas

Click on CNN today.  Shootings. Country rivalries. War.  Our hearts beg God for “peace on earth and good will toward men.”

John Piper, in today’s advent reading, teaches us, however, that peace on earth is not God’s ultimate goal.  Peace between us and God is the target.  When this happens, peace spreads.

This changes the way that I look at my own sins, as well as the sins of the world.  Seeing my sins (and those of the world) in light of my own unbelief makes my prayers very different.

Instead of asking for everyone to get along, I ask God to remove unbelief. I pray that people will come to know Him. I pray that my own heart’s doubts will be shattered by His grace.
Our deepest need is for him to “be our peace.”

I believe; help me in my unbelief!
— Mark 9:24, ESV
