Over the past couple of years, my family has celebrated the Christmas season by observing Advent in different ways. Advent is breaking down the story of Christ into the weeks before Christmas, studying different parts of the Christmas story, and preparing our hearts for Christmas day.
There are many, many resources to use as guides for Advent. I thought I'd highlight a few good ones for our readers.
The Advent Devotional from Austin Stone Resources
This amazing book is available for download and is $5. It comes with personal devotionals, as well as readings for the family, coloring sheets for the kids, and even a few recipes!
The Dawning of Indestructible Joy by John Piper
Free online here, or available for purchase, this advent devotional begins on December 1 and has short daily readings. Perfect for a short daily reflection time.
The Greatest Gift: Unwrapping the Full Love Story of Christmas by Ann Voskamp
With beautiful words to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ, Voskamp's book is a wonderful choice for a personal Advent devotional. She also explains how to have a "Joshua Tree," a tradition that her family has been celebrating for years.
Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus: Experiencing the Peace and Promise of Christmas
by Nancy Guthrie
This book is a compilation of writings spanning history all looking at different angles of the Christmas story. This is a great book for theology nerds as well as those who love to see proof that God's Word is timeless.
There are sure to be more devotionals that appear this next week, as Advent begins on November 30th this year.
