How Can My Soul Praise Him?

Praise the Lord, my soul;
    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the Lord, my soul,
    and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalm 103 : 1-5

When God first opened my eyes to see his glory, I could not hear a hymn of praise without my throat swelling and my eyes filling up with tears. I could not explain it then, but something in my soul was longing for an understanding that I did not yet have. I was deeply longing for my creator.

I believe my inmost being was praising him beyond my intellectual comprehension.

“Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.”

All of creation sings his praises. Creation is made to worship its creator, to praise his holy name.

1 Praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights above.
2 Praise him, all his angels;
    praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
3 Praise him, sun and moon;
    praise him, all you shining stars.
4 Praise him, you highest heavens
    and you waters above the skies.
5 Let them praise the name of the LORD,
    for at his command they were created,
Psalm 148 : 1-5

As David reminds himself of the benefits of God, he says that his youth is renewed like the eagle’s in verse 5 of Psalm 103.  The eagle is an emblem of strength, vitality and youthful endurance.

When I remember how God has forgiven me, redeemed me from the pit, shown me grace, love and blessings beyond all measure my soul is strengthened. The awe of those first encounters with him can be renewed.

1 As the deer pants for streams of water,
    so my soul pants for you, my God.
7 Deep calls to deep
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.
8 By day the LORD directs his love,
    at night his song is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.
Psalm 42: 1, 7-8

Let’s join all of creation in singing a song of prayer to the God of our lives. Watch this excerpt from a message Louie Giglio gave at the 2011 National Desiring God Conference -
